Turkey and leaders of the Arab world lead a drive
for Saddam Hussein to step down, as
US indicates this would avert a
war. This clearly demonstrates the intentions of the US are focused on overthrowing Saddam’s regime.
However, in his speech marking the 12th anniversary of the
Gulf War, Saddam defiantly refuses such an option
and his envoy to Syria scoffs at exile talk.
The
find of chemical warheads, then of documents
relating to nuclear technology in an Iraqi scientist’s home, and then
of four more warheads – all of which were unaccounted
for in Iraq’s declaration – continue the trickle of
breaches. US says it expects that by the end of January it will have
been clearly proven that Iraq is not cooperating
with the UN – possibly indicating they have something in store.
Saudi Arabia looks to a military coup inside Iraq so to
maintain Iraq’s regime after Saddam as it attempts to
prevent any democratisation of Iraq knowing this would probably spell the end
of its rule.
